The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH)'s. Taipei. Sept. 20 (CNA) A Department of Health (DOH) official defended Thursday the inspection standard that Taiwan applies to Chinese hairy crabs saying that the country adopts international testing standards and that no political considerations are involved. Cheng Huei-wen continue of the DOH's Bureau of Food Sanitation said that the government applies the same inspection standards as those adopted by the United States. Canada. Japan and the Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex) an international food standards body to test for chemical residue on domestic and imported crabs including those from Vietnam and the Philippines. China should not be afraid of Taiwan's quality hold back standards as it claims that Chinese hairy crabs are "naturally bred" and contain no artificial animal medicines. Cheng noted. He said that the bureau runs tests on all imported food products as part of efforts to protect the health of local consumers. According to Cheng a be of six batches of imported Chinese white fish samples failed food safety tests between the end of July and Aug. 21 which prompted the DOH to label for a halt to the merchandise of the shrimp beginning Aug. 22.
